European Biathlon Championships

Lucy continues to be disappointed her racing; skiing well but shooting 60% is tough given the incredibly high level of competition. On the women's squad, arguably the two best performances were from Maddie Phanuef moving USA into third place in the single mixed relay (they finished in 9th) and Chloe Levins cleaning all ten targets in the 7.5k sprint competition.

Coldest day in this winter so far

Actually, on our farm outside of town it was more like -15 degrees. It will warm rapidly, with a front moving in bringing ten inches of snow.

Ski touring on the Jackrabbit Trail

Backcountry conditions are pretty darn good in most parts of the Adirondacks.  (Take a look at the link for more details.)

Chilly, but great weekend for backcountry skiing

So, who got first tracks on Angel Skide?

So many books, and so little time ... although being retired I have a lot more time!

Well the holiday season is behind us, and to tell you the truth, I have not finished even a third of the books I got for Christmas. However, I always browse book lists from my favorite authors, and I think this is a good one. I am personally vouch for Running The Dream and Run The World, both of which are page turners.

A couple others caught my attention, and I hope to put them in my new kindle!

Angel Slide

I skied into Marcy Dam with Gary and John. It did not look very appealing yet, but there were ski tracks on the slide.

Titus Mountain Laps

Excellent skinning, and since I was there early, I got some nice powder before it was skied off.

Yahoo for snow and another good week of training

Well the magic numbers seem like 90k, 14 hours, and north of 4500' vertical gain. 0ver the past month, that combination of skiing, running, ergometer, strength, and yoga seems to work for me ... with only a tiny bit of Tylenol or ibuprofen.

OMG ... Brad Washburn was a serious hardman!

He may not have pioneered any great American rock climbs, but he hung his neck and ass out there, on big Alaskan and Yukon wilderness peaks. A fantastic read.

Lucy has her first two international races under her belt!

The first stop on the IBU Cup circuit is two weeks and a handful of races in Arber, Germany. The fields were large (130+) and the competition fierce. The athletes included Olympic and Junior World Championship biathlon medalists, as well as Stina Nilsson a Swedish Olympic medalist who recently switched to biathlon from cross country.

For Lucy, in the opener she had her "worst race ever." Today's race was a solid effort, although halfway through the race with only one missed target - and skiing quite well - she was still down 1:35 ... the reason ... almost every one of the top 25 had cleared prone targets and of course they had polished fast range procedures over several years.

As a first year full-time biathlete, I mentioned she needs to remember that the top three on the American squad averaged at least 60 international biathlon starts in their careers. No doubt the Euros averaged even more high level racing. So top results are going to take awhile, however she is having a great time and learning a bunch.

New competition trails at MVH

These new trails are built to World Cup specifications. Coming over the high point and skiing down to the stadium, the views are awesome. However, the climbs are long and steep ... hopefully future loppet races will not lap this trail too often!

Excellent ice conditions ...

But, having logged a lot of mileage this week, I took Sunday off.

Another good week of training

Between backcountry and classic track skiing, as well as jogging and my ergometer, I logged just under 90k. My total workout time - including four easy yoga and two strength sessions - was just under 15 hours. I also managed 5400' vertical.

Lucy is packing ...

For the next six weeks she will be doing biathlon races on the IBU Cup circuit, including the European Championships.

Thinking about doing Virtual Canadian Ski Marathon this year!

Back to back 50k days, and if I carry a 15 pound pack, I will get my silver Coureur des Bois medal (I have many bronze medals). Then in 2022 - Post Covid - I could get my gold medal, if I carry a 25 pound pack, and bivy overnight.

Best tour on the toll road this season

What a great morning ... Moderate temperature, enough snow, no wind, partly cloudy, very few people, and best of all, no dogs except mine!

The Nolan 14 ... on my bucket list!

Running the Nolan 14 in under 60 hours is a big thing.  The link is a short video of Joe Grant's attempt to push under 50 hours ... self supported. For me, I am thinking it might make a good two week mountain excursion, this summer, or next.

BLAST FROM THE PAST ... Ishinca Valley

A link to an article from the British 1969 Alpine Journal, about an expedition to Peru. Clearly, the Cordillera Blanca is much different today ... supplies readily available, transportation much improved, more and better lodging, and even some mountain huts. On the negative side, the peaks are fast losing their glaciers.

The Cordillera Blanca is one of my all-time favorite mountain spots; I hope to get back for one more trip before I Hangul my spikes, and Ranrapalca is still on the bucket list.

Wrestling with uphilling options

Later this week, the Whiteface Ski Area will begin to allow uphilling from 6-8am, three mornings a week. As a previous season pass holder, my season pass will be $59 (doubling in price), but the handwriting is on the wall, as first timers will pay $129. Seems outrageous, but they are the only game in town, or are they?

Thursday or Friday morning I am going to see if I can do laps before Pisgah opens at 10 am. Another option, is the 75 minute drive to Titus for a $14 day use uphill pass. Or, I could buy a senior lift ticket - giving me access for laps - and then ride chairlifts for the rest of the day for $29.

It's time to make some real turns, not toll road style.

Terrific video about Zach Miller

A must watch. Enclosed below is the trailer, the entire 37 minute video is also available on YouTube.

The video starts with his first ultra - 2013 JFK 50 miler, and moves on to early family years, training and life as the hut master at the Bart Camp at 10,200, and of course, his multiple UTMB races.

Spectacular mountain footage.

Happy New Year

A spectacular morning skiing at Mount Van Hoevenberg.
