Quote of the Week ... from a coffee mug in the Treetops dining room

In dwelling, live close to the ground.
In thinking, keep to the simple.
In conflict, be fair and generous.
In governing, do not try to control.
In work, do what you enjoy.
In family life, be completely present.

As we approach the longest day of the year are you dreaming about skiing?

KINGS OF THE ROAD ... a great read

For someone that got "into" running in the 1970s during the boom years, this will be a very evocative period piece. Memories of watching Shorter on TV winning the gold medal come quickly to mind, along with TV memories of Watergate, memories of the runner's watering hole the Eliot Lounge in Boston, as well as the famous 1982 Boston Marathon dubbed the "Duel in the Sun."

Any runner will enjoy this fast paced read, but especially someone who came of age in the 1970s.

Rock climbing on Owl's Head

Before the rain moved in, Gary and I managed some nice laps on moderate crack climbs. It was good to scratch some anorthosite.

Jon turns 26

After the Great Adirondack Trail Race, Selden baked a vegan cake, and we headed down to Saratoga to celebrate Jon's birthday. We went out to an awesome Indian restaurant and then had cake in his apartment. His job should start next week after they finish the background check.

Great Adirondack Trail Run

The long event is 11.6 miles and 3300', we did the shorter event which was 3.5 miles, with 500' of climbing, and over a thousand feet of knee pain descent. Melanie (NCS faculty) and Lucy finished 14th and 15th respectively. Lucy won some swag for being one of the fastest under 20 year-olds. I was smack-dab in the middle of the 90+ person field. I took the downhills slow and it still killed my knees.

BLAST FROM THE PAST ... coaching the 1984 NCS nordic team at the easterns

My top skier that year placed third. The two guys just in front of him combined to make 6 Olympic teams. Matt went on to high school, won a nordic combined silver medal, as a freshman, in the Junior Olympics and then switched to varsity basketball ... ugh!

Track workout with Lucy.

She warmed up with a mile jog, then 10 minutes of stretching, followed by 8X100 meters (target time of 18 seconds) with a 300 meter jog recovery. This was followed by another 10 minutes of stretching and a mile warm-down. I just jogged barefoot on the grass for 45 minutes. (This morning I did a short hike.)

Great Saturday morning Run With Lucy

Of course she had to wait for me every 10-15 minutes.

Off the couch ... Brian D.

Getting after it on a six pitch route in Tahquitz. The beta from Brian on "Whodunit" is as follows: What an aesthetic line! A little bit of every type of climbing technique was required: friction, face, finger, hand and fist cracks, some off width and a true chimney with a strenuous exit. We did it in 6 long… pitches: 5.9, 5.9. 5.8, 5.8, 5.7 (steep 2-3” crack dihedral with thankfully small incuts for my tired feet that were not visible from below) and a committing and stiff overhang finish, then a mellow 5.4 overhang with jugs to a 4th class groove to the true summit. Pretty perfect day; good guide and about 75 degrees with a little wind and no clouds. 10h car to car.

Lander ... who would have known

I spent a fair amount of time here in the 80s, as it was always where we geared up, or took rest days after the Winds. I did a bit of climbing in Sinks Canyon, but would never have imagined it turning into a Mecca.
