Quote of the Week ... William James
"The decisive thing about us is not strength, intelligence, or wealth: these are things we carry. The real question posed to us is the effort we are willing to make."

Track workout
I took some NCS students out to the track for a quick workout, which after a thorough warmup included both a bit of sprinting (100 m) and middle distance work (1600 m). My body is not ready for intervals yet, although I did have a good 30 minute run on the track.

Once A Runner
I jus re-read this wonderful novel, which draws on real life characters and events in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The story of Quenton Cassidy is a page turner, and much to my amazement I found this movie trailer ... the film was never actually produced and distributed though ... too bad.

My second week of transitioning with easy jogging
Doing laps around the 1k Dexter pasture with a waxing moon over Cascade. This is my fourth short running workout this week, which I have supplemented with some easy hikes, short stints on the rowing machine, and a bit of yoga.
Trooper Tour
While reading THE BOYS OF WINTER one couldn't help but be interested in the February 1944 ski traverse from Leadville to Aspen. The historical route was first retraced and skied by Lou "WILDSNOW" Dawson.

History Of The Tenth Mountain Division
A terrifically engrossing book by Charles Sanders. The literature of this storied fighting force seems to grow by leaps and bounds, however this book has a slightly different bent. Along with a strict chronological history of how the ski troops came to be, how they trained, and how the fought, we have an in-depth look at three very different soldiers in the 10th. Rudy, Jake, and Ralph were killed in action. This is also one of the few books on the subject that actually questions some of the tactical decisions made by upper echelon leadership.

The Billy Dutton Uphill Race
At just over 5k and 2000' vertical this run (or ski) up Squaw is a gut buster. This past weekend Callie won the run in 47:55 ... any truth to the rumor that her dad - El Presidente - is going to do the August run up Squaw?

Putting the skis away
Maybe I have a tour (or two) to do over on the Porter Mountain loop, however it is time to dust off the trail running shoes and the rock shoes. Get yourself fired up by watching this short Kilian Jornet video.CLICK HERE.

Sitting in the sun outside the hut, eating apple strudel, and enjoying the view of the Silvretta range.
Tour de Flatirons
An informal event, since Boulder Open Space land bans competitive races. Participants run up to the base of each Flatiron (Third, the Slab, Fifth, First, and the Front Porch), solo the 8 pitches of easy slab climbing, and sprint down the ankle busting back side.

Last ice of the season
Gary rapping down Crystal Ice Tower last Saturday after leading it in thin conditions. Out of view are his new Dynafit TLT ski mountaineering/climbing boots.
The cragging season has started
Despite the fact that they ice climbed in the morning, it was clear that Owls Head was dry, warm, and that the rock climbing season is upon us.
