Hock on Halloween

At school we always celebrate special events on Wednesday - no after school sports and no homework - so homemade costumes, spook house, carnival games, and of course candy, are the focus of the evening.

Fatigue, performance, and perceived effort

The Mystery of "Nonlocal" Fatigue

Runner's World

SWEAT SCIENCE Why does arm exercise make your legs feel tired? By alex hutchinson October 24, 2015 "Nonlocal fatigue" is one of those phenomena that seem either completely obvious or totally mystifying, depending on how you look at it. Consider, for example, a recent experiment by Michael Johnson and his colleagues at Nottingham Trent University, whose results appear in the Journal of Applied Physiology. The basic task in the experiment was simple: a cycling test to exhaustion at fixed power, Read the full story

Quote of the week – William Blake

From my ongoing tour through my climbing library ...

Great things are done when men and mountains meet;

This is not done by jostling in the street.

Guatemalan Volcanoes

We were supposed to climb one of the big three, however the weather was too wet to get the four wheel drive vehicle to the trailhead, so we hiked for a couple of hours in the rainforest at the base of Volcan Agua.

Heading home

A very hectic 72 hours in Guatemala, with massive amounts of schmoozing and food. I did get to do a 150 minute hike in tropical ecosystem complete with spider monkeys and very large spiders.

Heading home to the snow in the Adirondacks.

A fossil telling tales

Reel Rock 2015 was terrific. If you ever get the opportunity to see the video of Honnold and Caldwell climbing the Fitzroy traverse – it's pretty amazing.

During intermission Gary was lecturing my young staff about how life was in the old days!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK ... jeff long

A gripping historical novel that tells the tale of the plane that went down in the Sierras full of marijuana and cocaine, and the climbers that recovered the stash. As I continue to peruse the mountain library I read the first five chapters of thus gem; very entertaining, but maybe a little overwritten ...

"It's easy for climbers to confuse the wild surge of biochemicals, tape deck tunes, and naked risk with the song of being."

NCS chicken harvest

Most of the day was occupied by the harvesting of our flock of "old layers" After a great life as free range birds, their low egg production means it is time to put them in the freezer. Hard work. The kids did really well.

No running, hiking, climbing, or kayaking on the agenda yesterday.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK ... Eric Shipton

Perusing my recently unpacked mountaineering library I came across this gem, a book of essays by Galen Rowell. The book was bracketed - front and back - by two quotes from Eric Shipton's THAT UNTRAVELLED WORLD..

" I became less and less concerned with the mastery of technical difficulty, or even the ascent of individual peaks, but more and more absorbed in the problems and delights of movement over wide areas of mountain country."
