Three days in Manhattan

1. A generous gift of theater tickets to see Hamilton which was awesome.   2. A long series of trustee and committee meetings on Friday.   3. An important and very productive board meeting on Saturday, followed by a goodbye dinner for Kurt and then a Camp/School reunion ... aka the Gowanus Getdown in Brooklyn.

Not much sleep, and I was glad to get home for a long nap on Sunday afternoon.

South Korea getting ready for World Cups to test the 2018 Nordic Olympic venues

One of my former students is over there and reports a light winter like much of the Alps ... as we know here in the East snow making has become a must.

ANOTHER BLAST FROM THE PAST ...

A long day in the mountains, about 6-8 years ago on a Fossil Ice Climbing Weekend. Let's do it again; maybe Brian will invite us all out and we can climb in Ouray!

Lucy punched her ticket ...

She won both Mid-Atlantic junior national qualifiers pretty handily this past weekend. Lucy and her buddy St. Lawrence buddy, Jackie went 1-2. The Junior Nationals are in Lake Placid from March 3-11.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"A lot of people from big cities are moving into spiritual towns like Sedona and Telluride, where they can be Themself and get in touch with the Earth. A good spiritual town should have some Indians within 100 miles and good skiing or mountain biking within ten. The stores should sell turquoise bracelets and cappuccino, and there has to be a place to hook up a modem."
I THINK LAKE PLACID QUALIFIES IN EVERY RESPECT EXCEPT SELLING TURQUOISE BRACELETS!

The Gunde Hat

Just in from an easy run, and Selden yelled, "you are wearing your Gunde hat." Swix just released a retro version of the hat that the Swede Gunde Svan wore in the 1980s. During our early years I never went anywhere without it. I also jokingly suggested that we name our first child – if it was a boy – Gunde.

Walking the dog!

BLAST FROM THE PAST ...

Doing a very early repeat on Mount Katahdin with Jon Waterman. Colder than any day I had in Denali, with old school gear ... Carmen super gaiters, double leather boots, Chouinard piolet and alpine hammer, as well as first generation gore-tex and pile clothing.

Fossil Climbing History ... Chapter Two

Many of the slides did not transfer to digital very well, so the image quality is not as good as we would want. Nevertheless, Alaska has been an important stomping ground for the Fossil Club.

Chapter Three will be out soon, and it will cover Fossil Ice Climbing trips in the Northeast. HAPPY NEW YEAR.
