Time to get rid of your kick wax?

The classic long distance marathons are routinely won with just double poling. Occasionally sprint courses are just won by double poling. However, now a tough, 15k, Norwegian national championship is won by double poling.

Nordic stud

Hard to imagine this regimen, and that it has a brute like Noah Hoffman thinking that maybe he's a whimp training a mere 1000 hours a year!

Quote of the Week ... Camus

Having just read a column in the New York Times this morning about Albert Camus, I remembered fondly how much I treasured reading him in college. I resolved to re-read him in the coming year.

Spectacular trail running scenery

Miles Away from Dave MacLeod on Vimeo.

Scored ...

Lucy dropped a bundle of her summer earnings on a new pair of top end classic poles. While I was at High Peaks Cyclery picking them up I found in the sale bin the following: a pair of Intuition boot liners for $20, a Patagonia dress shirt for $15, and a Patagonia vest for $10.

Must have app for the nordic coach!

Slo-mo, deliver audio and text feedback, check joint and limb angles, draw on the video screen ... And it's free.

Singing in the rain ... Nordic style!

Skiing was pretty darn good but the weather was pretty darn crappy.

Pretty amazing week for American Nordic skiing

Sophie Caldwell wins a classic sprint and Jessie Diggins wins the 5k freestyle ... go USST.

First prep race of the winter

This was a relatively informal affair moved from Vermont Academy to the Dublin School to take advantage of their snow making. It was a very crowded short loop (.8k), and teams fielded a mix of single gender and co-ed teams in the sprint relay. A fun time was had by all, and several teams stayed to ski until it was dark. Lucy's St. Paul's team had the top co-ed time ... I think.

Strava ... year-end animated summary

Of course it doesn't include: rock climbing, ice climbing, yoga, rowing machine and treadmill workouts, downhill skiing, or days when I simply left my iPhone home. However, it is fun ...

Looking more wintry ...

More snow expected tonight, but the toll road was scratchy but skiable.

Getting a little anxious ...

Planning a March hut to hut ski trip in the Alps but it seems they are as bad, or maybe, even worse than the Northeast. This picture from Davos is pretty grim.

Christmas reading

As always, the favored gifts for everyone in the family, were books. I have a lot of great reading to do.

Merry Christmas ...

The return of winter with ice forming on the lake.

Merry Christmas

The temperatures have started to drop, but at 48° it feels like a late September or October!

It was 60° but ...

Still skiing laps before the lifts open at Whiteface. We only did a 45 minute workout, as Lucy had a long day yesterday – an hour on snow and then a two hour rollerski.

How Nordic skiers survive in a bad winter

No snow but ...

Another good skate workout on the mixing bowl at Whiteface, the bottom GPS photo records my convoluted traverses.  It was 45 degrees, and I skied 6k with 400'+ vertical, in 40 minutes.

Hardly any snow so ...

I grabbed another book off the shelves and decided just to continue reading about skiing!

Whiteface toll road

Well a two hour ski up-and-down the toll road on 3 inches of snow certainly isn't orgasmic, however it was certainly better than all the other alternatives.

Brutal workout

40 minutes skating in very heavy wet, man-made snow on the mixing bowl at Whiteface ... Heart rate was way up and thought I might puke.
