Mark has been plagued with blisters on this Mount Rose section. Trying different tape jobs; trying different shoe combinations; and heading to the pharmacy after we got out for tincture of benzoin and liquid skin.

Sunday off will help.

Mount Rose Section

Great views; the trail faced south so we are thoroughly parched, and in the late afternoon we lost the trail which was covered in snow. We managed to find mud lake and a great bivy.

TRT overnight

At Mud Lake, Hock in his half-bag and Mark with his blister kit, the thunderstorm passed us bye and we are back on the trail.

22.5 kilometers, 1300 vertical, and awesome views ... a bit hazy given the forest fire on Mt. Rose in Nevada.

Quite a show ...

A 30k shakedown cruise with an alpine start was planned for this morning ... as several fossils know El Presidente is not at his finest in the early morning. His alarm went off an hour late, no coffee, which shoes to take, the hydration bladder lid came off spilling several liters in the living room, and then the complex tape job for the blister ... needless to say it was not a pre-dawn start!

A novel about the Cordillera Blanca ...

Halfway through, and with the exception of a few inaccuracies, it has been something of a page-turner. Not a climbing novel per say, but it does involve trekkers stomping through some climbing basecamps.

The novel is set in the early days of the Sendero Luminoso, when they spread out from the jungle into the mountains. A nasty time for Peru, and for all the locals and climbers who were robbed or killed in Ancash province.

Significant study on climate change impact on the ski industry

The study sets the current baseline for season length (downhill and cross country), and then makes projections for the season length in 2050 and 2090, with projections included for the economic impact. Suffice it to say ... not a pretty picture ... in the northeast season length could be reduced by 50% by 2050 and 80% by 2090.

Lucy did a running biathlon race in Old Forge, while I ran 7.5k spectating the race. I also hiked up Mount Maculey, and she did a two hour double pole ski.
