Nordic Ski At Dusk

We are due for a major storm over the next 36 hours, but right now all we had was a small covering on our lake. Still, it was great to get out there and ski hard for 45 minutes.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK ... william james

As William James says, “Beyond the very extreme of fatigue and distress, we may find amounts of ease and power we never dreamed ourselves to own; sources of strength never taxed at all because we never push through the obstruction.”

Awesome video ... The Ordinary Skier

The Ordinary Skier Trailer 01 from OAKLEY on Vimeo.

This hour long video about Seth Morrison makes you lust after Chamonix. It is also a reminder that as Jon Krakauer said in his essay in the book EIGER DREAMS ... it is the death capital of the world for adventure sports.  I particularly liked the sections about skiing the North Face of Tour Ronde, which brought back fond memories of doing that climb with Jon Waterman, in full on, black ice conditions, during a February cold snap in the 1970s.

You can watch the video for free on Hulu, or if you are an AMAZON PRIME member. I highly recommend it.

Dawn Patrol

With the warm weather killing the early season golf course skiing, I did my first skin up the Whiteface alpine slopes. There were another 10 early morning types, and it seems that management looks the other way as long as we are down when they start running the lifts.

Strength Training For Ski Mountaineering

Given the limited time I have to train, and given my accessibility to mountains, and given a dearth of gyms, this is not my bag. However, I do know for the youth out there - thirty to fifty year-olds - this is good stuff.

PB in the last race of the season

Lucy's team finished up an incredible season with a 12-2 record in meets, winning the league championship, and being narrowly beaten for the New England Championship by Deerfield. Of the top ten runners on the team, only one graduates, so they should be quite the powerhouse next year as well.

Calf-burner in Hong Kong

After the international boarding school fair I went for a two hour jog. If you discount the heat and humidity, then this surely must be one of the great cities to run in. Superb vertical, nice pedestrian paths, its incredibly clean, and it has spectacular views. I logged about 2500' this afternoon. Unfortunately I am traveling to Shenzhen tomorrow to meet with parents, and I fly home Monday, so I will not be able to check out the trails which are supposed to be equally fantastic.
