Trail running on campus

Running with some of our students who are getting ready for the Bement Relays. (They did some easy jogging with 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m intervals thrown in.) It seems like Spring has finally come.

Fabulous day at Alta

This corner of the Wasatch received 34 inches of snow in the past 36 hours. I skied until 2:00 pm and then toured up the summer auto road.

Yahoo – back at Alta again!

Everyone is raving about yesterday's powder day. I got in shortly before 1 AM and I only got about four hours sleep, but I'm pretty psyched.

Gear nerds ... this seems pretty cool

Coming soon a small wearable patch which, in addition to capturing heart rate will diagnose hydration levels, electrolyte balance, lactate threshold, glucose level, and calories burned—all by analyzing sweat in real time. Check it out ...

Quote of the Week

French alpinist, Étienne Bruhl forever cemented his leadership position in the male-chauvinist-pig-hall-of-fame by declaring, "The Grépon has disappeared. Of course, there are still some rocks standing there, but as a climb it no longer exists. Now that is has been done by two women alone, no self-respecting man can undertake it. A pity, too, because it used to be a very good climb."

Ski mountaineering ... the dangerous game

In the ski-bum brain, the chance to ski with a magus like Andrew McLean is the equivalent of an invitation for a night on the town with Don Juan. The allure is great, but there's always a possibility that the excursion will not end well. McLean is a...

El Ultimo Hielero ... The Last Ice Merchant

A great article and video in the New York Times, of the last guy to work in the "ice mines," digging blocks of ice from Chimborazo's glaciers, and transporting them to Ecuadorean markets.

Winter season review

Looking over my log, it looks like I only did 4-5 pitches of ice. Clearly as the picture reveals I used the Charlet Moser tool, more often for chipping ice for my scotch. However, between nordic and randonee skiing, as well as riding the lifts, I managed 90 days on snow so far!

The first day that will feel like Spring

A glorious sunrise and although it is below freezing now, it is going to be in the mid-50s today!

Fiction about climbing and skiing

As many of you know, I read a lot of this genre, and even consider myself something of a collector. I was reading something recently in the New York Times about authors who had famously go decades before publishing another novel after a success. James Salter was one of the authors mentioned. Which caused me to do a little retrospective work on him, as I am a big fan of SOLO FACES and the script that he wrote for Robert Redford's THE DOWNHILL RACER.

The link below is a fun little interview with him ...
