Just a time trial but ...

A great start to Lucy's season. She had a week long ski camp at Foret Montmorency about an hour north of Quebec City. She had a very high volume week, as did the skiers from ten other teams. However, she finished seventh in a field of 54; she beat a few gals she had never beaten before, and at least for now she is the #1 seed from St. Lawrence University.

Silvretta Ski Tour

From the WildSnow European desk: Be careful where you sport ski boots in Austria, you might get arrested. The mayor of ski resort town Ischgl responded to the dire issue of noisy ski boots clomping around town, and banned them after eight in the evening. Thus, the burning questions: Did they ban ski touring boots as well as alpine boots?

The "good" snow queen ...

Well, in our sugarbush we have the lamppost prop that was welded by students for The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe." When the base is covered you can put away the rock skis. Since the base is still visible, I was out on a pair of Europa 99 circa 1978. However, the forecast indicates that the snow queen will work her magic until tomorrow mid-day.

Outdoor gear lust ...

A beautiful video, selling this great concept ... However, how much disposable income do you have to have to buy the entire package? (A lot! The total package us in excess of $2500.)

The West Ridge Of Everest

A great video and a fantastic story that many have forgotten. This video is free with Amazon prime or otherwise just a 99 cent rental. What an amazing route, with narration by Jim Whittaker, Dave Dingman, Tom Hornbein, and Jon Krakauer ... as well as the recorded radio audio of Willi Unsoeld on the West Ridge ... "It's too damn tough to try to go back Jim, it would be too dangerous ... there are no rappel points Jim, so it's up and over for us today"

Climate Change ...

This blog is not political. Hock - the fossil historian - however, does believe in climate change, and along with all the mountain related activities which are covered, so too is the occasional article on climate change. But, given the incomprehensible person that the President-Elect appointed to oversee transition at the EPA, it is imperative that we keep our eye on the ball to what is happening on the globe.

Ice is forming on the Lake

Next week it is projected to be much colder, so maybe there will be some ice to climb over Thanksgiving.

Whiteface has started to make snow so there were certainly be opportunities for the Dawn Patrol.

Late Fall At The Fossil Cabin

Now that most early morning temperatures are at, or below freezing, it was time to fire up the sauna over the weekend.

Trumpeter Swan

On Friday, about a 100 yards from the Rockefeller House where we live, this beautiful but highly unusual scene unfolded. Larry Master a - well respected - local ornithologist took the photograph and verified that this was indeed a Trumpeter Swan. For now, "our" swan is the easternmost Trumpeter swan reported in North America this fall. They summer in Alaska and northern Canada.
