The 1982 critics panned the movie despite strong direction from Fred Zinneman who had also done From Here To Eternity, The Day Of The Jackal, Julia, and High Noon.

The movie was inspired by Kay Boyle's short story, "Maiden, Maiden." As you can tell from the Amazon reviews, the movie is a gem.
